Reasons For Breast Implant Removal

WHY WOMEN ARE CHOOSING TO EXPLANT

While many women choose to have their implants removed and replaced with new implants, some women are choosing to take them out entirely. BIRA™ was established exclusively for the latter group of women to help lower the high patient fees associated with breast implant removal surgery and reversing the breast augmentation procedure they have previously had in the past. The most common reasons women choose to have breast implant removal surgery include:

1. Implant Complications

Breast implant complications include: capsular contracture, implant rupture, folding, displacement, infection, leakage of silicone, and deflation (if the breast implant is filled with saline).

2. Changing Preferences

Many women who have had breast implants when they were younger may later make the decision to have them removed. The reasons for doing so can include changes in personal preferences, beauty ideals or lifestyle changes.

3. BIA-ALCL

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The FDA wants to raise awareness of the cancer, even though it's very rare. The estimated incidence rates range from a high of 1 in 3,817 patients to a low estimate of 1 in 30,000. When diagnosed early and managed properly - it is readily curable.

4. Breast Implant Illness

Breast Implant Illness (BII) is a term used by women who have breast implants and who self-identify and describe a variety of symptoms including (but not limited to) fatigue, chest pain, hair loss, headaches, chills, photosensitivity, chronic pain, rash, body odour, anxiety, brain fog, sleep disturbance, depression, neurologic issues, and hormonal issues that they feel are directly connected to their saline or silicone, textured or smooth breast implants.

About Explant Surgery

BREAST IMPLANT REMOVAL OVERVIEW

  • Known as explant surgery with capsulectomy, the procedure is performed as a day surgery at BIRA’s licensed and fully-accredited private hospitals in Sydney.

  • Breast implant removal surgery takes approximately 60-90 minutes.

  • It is conducted under general anaesthesia administered by a specialist anaesthetist.

  • Typically, this procedure can be done using your previous breast augmentation incision sites.

  • In some cases, your explant surgeon may need to make an additional incision to ensure removal of the capsule.

  • Once both implants and their capsules have been removed with an en bloc or full capsulectomy (when it is safe to do so), the incisions will be closed, and you will be placed in a compression bra.

  • If you are in good health, at a stable weight, and are a non-smoker, you will likely heal quickly and only need a week of downtime.

  • Normal daily activities like showering, eating and light activity such as walking can be resumed within 24 hours after surgery.

From $9,800*

Breast Implant Removal + Capsulectomy*

Your surgery will be performed in our fully-licensed and accredited hospital in Sydney under general anaesthesia administered by a specialist anaesthetist.

This all-inclusive fee is based on a straight forward Breast Implant Removal (bilateral explant with capsulectomy). Straight forward meaning that there is: no rupture of implants, you do not have capsular contracture (Baker Grade 3 or 4) , and you do not have polyurethane coated implants.

Prior to attending a consultation, please organise with your local GP to get an MRI or USS of both breasts to rule out rupture. We will need the report and the images at your consultation. Also ensure you have your implant ID card. This card would have been given to you after your last surgery. This would have details of the brand of implants you have, the style and the size of the implants. If you have misplaced this information, please contact your primary surgeon’s rooms or the hospital you were operated in for a copy of your operation notes.
